Homemade remineralizing toothpaste
After reading the ingredients in regular toothpaste I was a bit puzzled. One of the ingredients is sodium lauryl sulfate. Interestingly enough, this is also an ingredient in laundry soap and a variety of other household cleaners. There are several harmful ingredients in conventional toothpaste that can possibly affect our health and are questionable and should be avoided.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate-is registered as an insecticide, and is responsible for the foaming action you get from conventional toothpaste and through the manufacturing process results in possibly becoming a carcinogenic byproduct.
- Fluoride-is a toxic chemical that produces a number of serious adverse health effects including: accumulation in tissues, endocrine and neurological dysfunctions, and wreaks havoc with enzymes.
- Triclosan-One of the ingredients in Colgate Total is a chemical that has been linked to antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption.
- Artificial sweeteners-aspartame and other artificial sweeteners can cause a multitude of issues such as headaches, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, gastrointestinal issues, chills, weakness, shooting pains in the extremities, behavioral disturbances, memory lapses, numbness, neuritis and other issues.
- Propylene Glycol-is a known skin, eye and lung irritant and can possibly cause organ system toxicity. It is a type of mineral oil that is used in antifreeze, enamels, and airplane de-icers.
- Diathanolamine (DEA)-is a known hormone disrupter and can react with other ingredients to form a potential carcinogen that has been linked to cancers of the stomach, esophagus, liver and bladder.
I decided to search online and try to make my own healthier version of toothpaste. There are many recipes. Some as primitive as just baking soda and salt but I wanted a more “Tooth pastey” (yes that is a real word even if I just made it up), product. I found some recipes for a remineralizing tooth paste and experimented with a few different things and eventually came up with something that I love and have been using it for many many months now.
Recipe:
6 TBSP
3 TBSP
6 TBSP powdered
1 TBSP
4-5 TBSP melted
Essential oil of your choice (and to taste). I use
Half pint jars or 6 oz container to store toothpaste in.
I use peppermint and I like mine really minty so I use 8 droppers full.
Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl, add the essential oils, and then pour in the coconut oil and mix well. Store in a glass half pint jar.
I absolutely love this stuff! I also make some for my kids with less peppermint oil than mine and I also add some orange oil. They love it too!
Other essential oils to consider:
Cinnamon
Orange
Clove
Spearmint
